What is Imperfect Counselling
The following lines are a brief introduction to who I am and what you can expect if you come to me for Counselling.
As we go through our lives , ALL of us experience difficulties at one time or another. Usually we find a way to muddle through and keep going. Sometimes though, we can feel stuck and unable to move forward. It can be hard to ask for help at these times. Friends and family may want what’s best for us but often they can’t offer us the dispassionate honesty that we need if we’re going to understand our situation more clearly.
As a counsellor, it is my role to try to see the world through your eyes and to understand your situation as best I can. I am most certainly not here to judge you. My hope is that we will be able to form an open and trusting alliance and that together we can explore the issue that has brought you to counselling.
I am not an expert in human motivation; I won’t have the answers to your problems or be able to fix them. I don’t believe that I can ‘fix’ anyone else. Any solutions or advice that I might be able to supply would be from my experience of my life, and would have little to do with yours.
Your ideas, your insights, and your understanding are what is important. It is these that will help you make decisions and changes that will work for you in your life. Together, through honest and open dialogue, we will try to unpick the threads of what is going on for you.
Ultimately we are in counselling in order to bring about some sort of a positive change in our lives.
Change can be unexpectedly tricky. If it was easy, we probably wouldn’t need help to do it.
I believe that we are all capable of moving forward, of making lasting changes that help us to be more who we really are.
As a counsellor I shall be alongside you, talking through the things that come up, in the belief that you will know the way forward when we meet it.
While it is my role to ‘hold the space’ in the counselling room, it is you who will set the pace of the counselling itself. It is often during the time between sessions, when you are on your own, that the ideas or realisations tend to come. So together we’ll find a rhythm that works for you.
This is the basis for counselling as I understand it. A collaboration between you and I, in which we explore things that are important to you, with the idea that you will be able to make a positive change in your life.
“ Sometimes my only remaining choice is to follow a path that I fear will be difficult and painful.
When this is so, it gives me courage to know that I have a trusted companion, a fellow traveller, by my side.”
Schedule a Session
Want to hear more about how I can transform your life? Contact me today to schedule a session.
The sessions will last for about 50 minutes - the first one may be a bit longer.
The price is £ 35.00 per session. As a rule of thumb I suggest that we think in terms of around 6 sessions. I say this because it can take a little time for us to establish a sense of trust, which we will need if we are to talk openly and honestly, although as I have said, it is you who will decide this, and I will support you.
I prefer to work face to face, especially at the beginning, but I recognise the usefulness and practicality of ‘screen sessions’.
